Third benefit: Angle Of View
In order to overcome the restrictions of water magnification and focal length multipliers, you have to start with the widest possible lens you can afford.  Fortunately many of today's "starter" kits include a 18-50mm lens with the bundle.  To me, 18mm is the minimum that a photographer should begin with in underwater photography.
