Underwater Photography (continued)

I realize that certain environmental fanatics will argue that feeding marine life human food is not "natural" behavior but I offer this as a defense: as a practice I think giving something to the marine world for an image is infinitely preferable to taking from it for a buck.  In other circumstances, everyday fish bait would make an acceptable substitute, and is "environmentally friendly."  Fish eat fish.  Why not use it to a photo advantage?

3. Always use a strobe:
This is so important, it bears repeating:  Always use a strobe.

All divers know that colors fade with depth. Strobes, (flashes) are essential to effective underwater photography. They bring back the colors that are lost. Without them most underwater photos will seem drab and monochromatic.

Natural Light   With Strobe

Even in situations where there is ample available light, say ten feet from the surface, warm colors begin to fade noticeably.

Unless the photographer is deliberately trying for a dramatic shot, like a silhouette of a diver, use a strobe. Strobes are also useful for balanced fill lighting, and you can read more about in the Underwater Strobes section.
