Disadvantages of Digital: (continued)

Exposure with film   Digital blowout

Since the tonal range of a digital image is less than film's, "hotspots" tend to blowout picture detail.

Blowout is not merely limited to underwater photography. It is so common to digital photography, especially in compact models, that even something as common as a sunset often becomes a test of the photographer's skills.

Manufacturers are constantly improving and upgrading their cameras, and it's only a matter of time before digital cameras rival film cameras in terms of features and quality.

Constant improvements in images sensors means that many of the latest "prosumer" digital cameras are better equipped to handle the problems of blowout. In fact, in many cases, software can be used to correct blowout, creating a near film-like quality to high contrast situations like the ones previously pictured.
