Spider Crab
Mithrax sp.

With its claws extended, a spider crab emerges from a coral outcropping.

Roatan, Honduras

Sea Facts:

The largest known crabs are Japanese Spider Crabs. They weigh up to 40 pounds and have a 12-foot leg span, the length of a small car! Spider crabs are scavengers. In May, 2005, over 50,000 spider crabs swarmed over the sea floor, in Port Phillip Bay, Australia. It is suspected that this was part of a breeding migration.
