Striped Grunt and Grouper

Two fish line up patiently at a cleaning station while a wrasse begins removing parasites around the mouth.

Bonaire, Dutch Antilles

Sea Facts:

Cleaning stations are remarkable evolutionary developments. Large fish will congregate in "safe zones" to permit smaller cleaner fish and shrimp to scour their bodies for parasites and algae. The cleaners will often enter the mouths of their "clients" without risk. Such mutually beneficial associations are commonplace on coral reefs.
