Anemone Hermit Crab
Dardanus sp.

A colorful hermit crab, crawls along the ocean floor at night in search of food.

Bonaire, Dutch Antilles

Sea Facts:

Hermit crabs are opportunistic squatters. Since their bodies are soft, they inhabit abandoned sea shells, to protect themselves.  As their bodies grow, they abandon their old "home" and seek larger shells.  It is believed that the anemones serve as "guard dogs" protecting the crab with their stinging tentacles.
